A Mad Tea Party

See Goal Number 10? Kiss it good-bye. I hosted a tea party at my house today. It was lovely. I made scones and danishes (which helps with goal number 63), as well as cucumber sandwhiches. That was quite an adventure. Neither my mother nor I had made any such food before, but our directions were fairly easy. The danishes turned out delicious, as did the scones (although, I'm more partial to danishes).

I finished cooking around 1:30, ate some sausage for lunch, and then got ready for my friends' arrival. I wore a one-shoulder dress with my brand new wedges (I've been dying to wear them, so I jumped at the oppurtunity). Finally, Meaghan and Madison got here. We ate, chatted, and Madison played classical music. It was a great day.

Oh, goal number 60 can be crossed off as well. A couple of weeks ago, I saw The Phantom Tollbooth at my school. Not only did I get math extra credit, I got to see a play I hadn't read since sixth grade. It wasn't the best performance, but for a high school play, it was good. I'm glad I went.

I'm headed to New Orleans the day after tomorrow, and I'm sure some goals will get crossed off then.

I'm a terrible blogger.

In my defense, these past few weeks of school have been crazy. Thank goodness I only have one official week and exam week left. Then summer! Hopefully I can knock out quite a few goals over that break. I haven't been doing too well on that front.

That's not to say I haven't been working on some of my goals though. I started reading The Bell Jar today, and although I didn't get to post this before May ended, I most certainly didn't forget about my May saint.

Actually, I was confirmed exactly a week ago, so in honor of this, my May saint is also my Confirmation saint: St. Clare of Montefalco. A nun extremely devoted to the Passion, Clare actually saw a vision of Christ, and He placed His cross on her heart. What a perfect reminder to us of all the cross we are called to bear on our own hearts.

Also, I applied to Starbucks the other day. It was a long application, and kept asking me questions about what adjectives I would use to describe myself or giving my hypothetical situations. Then, completely out of the blue, it started asking me about where I lived during Katrina, if I was displaced, and the like. It completely threw me off, because Katrina isn't mentioned a whole lot here, especially since it happened nearly six years ago. But hey, if those questions help me get a job, I'm okay with it. They probably don't get many affirmatives to that here.

Anywho, that's it for now. I hope to have better and more frequent updates for you within the upcoming weeks.

Just An Update

So today, I tried to get a job application from Borders. Turns out, you have to be 18to work there. I don't quite understand why. It's not like I'll be dealing with alcohol or porn or anything. I won't be 18 for another 5 months, so I guess I'll just have to keep looking for a more youth-employee-friendly job. I've heard Jason's Deli is hiring. Fingers crossed!

In other news, I finished reading Nine Stories today, and over the weekend, I watched Donnie Darko. That movie's been on my list since seventh grade, and I'm glad I finally got to watch it. It was quite good.

Well that's all the updates I have for now. Hopefully, I'll have more soon, especially as we're quickly approaching summer.

178 Days 'Til NaNoWriMo?!

When May hits, my longing for November does too. It's not because it's suddenly getting warm (or warm-ish; I've been wearing jeans and sweatshirts for the past two days) and I want the cold weather back (I don't), but because I'm finally thinking about NaNo again.

It's been about 6 months since last November, and 6 more to wait. I've already got my idea though, and am just itching to start writing it. Instead, I'm trying to put my creative forces to the other novel I'm working on.

Patience, Katie. Patience.

St. Catherine of Siena

April is quickly coming to a close, and AP exams begin Monday, so I've decided to get this month's saint taken care of. Originally, I was going to talk about St. Terese of Lisieux, but while watching the royal wedding, it was revealed to me that today is St. Catherine of Siena's feast day. And, since we share the same name (although with a variation in the spelling), Catherine it is!

Catherine was born in Siena, Italy in 1934 along with her twin sister, who died not too long after her birth. When she was around five, she saw Jesus Himself, and said He had smiled and blessed her.

When she was sixteen, her older sister died in childbirth, and her parents wanted Catherine to marry her widower. Having made a vow to remain chaste at the age of seven, Catherine had no desire to do so. To protest her parents wishes, she fasted until her parents gave in.

With visions of St. Dominic, Catherine decided to join the Dominican order, where she led a life of unselfish giving, "married" to Christ. Her ministry sent her to Rome, after she convinced Pope Gregory XI to return to the same place. After his death, she spent her time convincing nobles and cardinals of the legitimacy of the papacy of Pope Urban VI.

After extreme fasting (she recieved only the Body of Christ and was unable to keep any earthly food down), she died at the age of 33 in Rome. She was buried at first, but after reports of miracles occuring at her grave, her incorruptible body was moved and placed inside Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva. Her head, however, rests in Sienna.

Pious II canonized her in 1461, and Pious XII named her Patron Saint of Italy (in addition to St. Francis of Assisi). Paul VI named her a Doctor of the Church in 1970, and John Paul II made her a patron saint of Europe. She also is the patroness of Theta Phi Alpha, the American Catholic sorority.

Day 5 Update

So today I bought The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which is one of the books on my list (okay, so technically it's only a mental list right now, but I'll write it down eventually)--goal 37. But I also bought Deathly Hallows, so I'm watching that before I start reading.

Also, I'm trying to get someone to come to the circus with me tomorrow. It's Barnum and Bailey's last day here, but apparently it's supposed to storm. And I'm having trouble getting people to go with me. My mom's not a circus person, and my sister is scared of clowns (okay, they're creepy, so it's understandable).

Speaking of my sister, she broke up with her boyfriend. Never fear though, goal 11, I'm sure she'll have another before our time period is up. And if not, I've got hope for Ashley.

Day Zero Begins

Hey y'all! Today is Day One of my Day Zero Project. The blog isn't quite up yet (AKA I suck at HTML and have a fashion project due tomorrow), but I wanted to start ASAP, and I'll fix it soon.

So from now until June 6, 2014, my days will be filled with trying to achieve things I said I'd do, if I ever got the time.

I actually kicked off my first day by baking chocolate meringue cookies (goal #63) for some people at school. I got the recipe out of a book of my mom's. They were fairly simple to make, but it's hard to follow a recipe when the book doesn't stay open. I also needed help from my mom because I wasn't entirely sure how to get just the whites out of the eggs. Currently, though, the cookies are in the oven, so fingers crossed they turn out well!
